Album of the week 20) Squarepusher - Go Plastic
I just heard this album 2 days ago and instantly feel in love with it. I don’t keep up with electronic music much because it is one of those genres that is very repetitive. However Squarepusher is pretty unique in my book, he doesn’t follow any song format. He just does what he feels is right. This whole album was an experience that was fast and interesting. Everything just felt perfect and random. So if you are looking for obscure random experimental electronic music, this is it. Either way if you are into any type of electronic music give it a listen.
Favorite Song on the Album: I Wish You Could Talk
Album of the week 19) The XX - XX
When I first listened to this album I didn’t know what to expect. I am super glad that I gave it a chance. This was in my introduction to “dream pop”. The production on this thing is really high and doesn’t get boring. The duo’s voices are so different but so perfect together. The album has some nice 808s and some catchy guitar riffs that just drag you in. Subject matters are nice. Overall this is a chill album to groove to. If you like Radiohead, Beach House, or just chill music in general, you might want to check this album out. Also if you like The XX, I recommend checking out “The Notorious XX”, it is a nice mash up project.
Favorite Songs on the album: Islands
Album of the Week 18) Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You
Man this album. This is the definition of Soul. You can tell Aretha gave her best on this album. Whenever I hear one of the songs off this album I have to listen to the whole thing. Granted some of the songs are covers, she made all the songs hers. This album is perfect for winding down and getting you sappy. Just one of those classic albums. Musically it is your typical classic soul but with Aretha killing it on vocals. That is another reason I like this album because the music was made to put Aretha in the front and let her shine. This album definitely influenced many modern artists.
Favorite Song on the album: Baby, Baby, Baby but A Change Is Gonna Come comes close
Album Of The Week 17) Michael Jackson - Thriller
When I think of the perfect album I think of this album. Every songs is great. It is just enjoyable great music. Each of the songs is strong by itself but as a whole it is a classic. I believe one of the things that makes this album great is the musical talent that Michael had being in the industry since a early age. The second was that he was not scared of mixing genres together and didn’t set boundaries for himself. Thriller is not one of those albums that has a theme or concept to it, but it didn’t need all that. It is just a great album that can hype you up or chill you down. Quincy Jones was forever a legend after since he produced this masterpiece. 9 songs that is all it took. Michael and him mixed and mixed till they were completely satisfied. This album crossed genres and showed people that genres were meant to be crossed. If you haven’t heard this album please do yourself a favor and give it a listen. No matter what music you are into I think you will enjoy this masterpiece/classic.
Album Of The Week 16) Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, M.A.A.D City
Kendrick does it again nothing else needs to be said.
Album Of The Week 15) Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Gnarls Barkley is a duo, that includes the producer Danger Mouse and the singer Cee Lo Green. St. Elsewhere was their first album. Most people know the song Crazy due to its commercial success. However not a lot of people have actually listened to the album that it belongs to. This album is very different then the norm. The production on this thing is amazing, I would expect it to be it is Danger Mouse. It blew a lot of people cause they haven’t heard anything like and it sounds amazing. Danger Mouse did his part with experimenting with different sounds. Cee Lo Green also did his part with lyrics and vocals. The vocals are not that predictable. I also loved the lyrics that Cee Lo Green wrote. He tackled subject matters like suicide (Just A Thought), making sure you enjoy life (The Last Time) and many other interesting topics. This album in general is one big experiment gone perfectly. You can tell by just the genre people put this album under (soul, alternative rock, alternative hip hop). If you are into different music you will enjoy this album.
Favorite Song Of This Album: Just A Thought
Album Of The Week 14) Nirvana - Nevermind
This album is amazing. I went on a bike ride through town on this album the other day. It was perfect because it changes tempo pretty often. This album is great. I liked grunge after this album. Even though this album has a lot of elements from pop, those were only used to make the songs catchy. I also love the lyrics on this thing. This is one of the few albums that have an overall theme and an individual theme to each song. Also the subject matters that they touch on in this album are only touch by few others. I think the only other band that has come close to matching them as far as subject matter is Radiohead. These subject matters include society and not fitting in. And who doesn’t get pump when they hear Smells Like Teen Spirit? Seriously? I would say this is a perfect album.
Favorite Song Of This Album: (This always changes but currently it is) Lithium
Album Of The Week 13) Audioslave - Audioslave
Audioslave is a rock super group. It is basically Soundgraden + Rage Against The Machine. This is their debut album. I think it is really good.
Album of the Week 12) Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Sorry for not doing one of these in a while. I saw Stevie Wonder at Outside Lands 2012. His performance was amazing and made me listen to him more. I really like all his albums but I have this one on vinyl. This album has the highest musically and lyrical value possible. If you haven’t heard this album, I seriously think you should reconsider your life. All the instruments used in the album are played at their best. Stevie pours his heart on the vocals in this album. An example of this is All in Love Is Fair. Subject matters on the album are interesting and vary. Overall a MUST listen.
Favorite Song of This Album: All in Love Is Fair
Album Of The Week 11) Daft Punk - Discovery
This album is one of the best in its genre. The reason is why I like it because it is not the same of electronic music. Daft Punk is always one step ahead of its competition because it adds complexity to their songs. Most artists in this genre just have one linear scheme where the song grows. It is cool but that gets old. Daft Punk doesn’t have that linear scheme; they have it in small portions in their songs. However Daft Punk builds sideways with changing the beat or tempo completely, they also sometime just break everything down and rebuild. I also enjoy this album because of how flexible it is. You can study to it, read to it, get pumped up with it, party to it. All in the same album!
Favorite song off the album: This is a hard choice but I am going to with Digital Love.
